Buy a Baseball America`s Favorite Game Essay Online

Purchase a Baseball America's Favorite Game Essay Online Paper about Baseball As spring comes in, when the magnificence of the earth wakes up once again, the incomparable American game starts in North America and Canada. It is far beyond a ball game played between two groups of at nine players on a precious stone molded field †with bases, gloves, bats and balls, a hill, soil on in infield, grass in the outfield, and individuals in the stands. Baseball is a round of agile physicality, knowledge, and class. Now and again, baseball resembles an artful dance, a presentation and a psyche game, a round of chess. It’s altogether different than †even better than â€that merciless game called American football, not to be mistaken for soccer. Baseball is undeniably more sympathetic in nature than football, which is a brutish round of viciousness excessively like war. Baseball is a gentleman’s game, a reasoning keeps an eye on game of minds, quality, endurance, speed, and reflex. Additionally, baseball, which is said to have advanced from the British game cricket, was made in New England around the hour of the American Civil War, played by Union troopers to possess their personal time, to likely occupy them and help in helping them keep their mental soundness when not battling. It requires fixation and rivalry, so it was a useful device in uniting them to accomplish something fun and pleasant. Next came proficient baseball classes in different pieces of the nation, in urban areas in many states in America. After some time, in some structure, individuals all over were playing the extraordinary game †regardless of whether for no particular reason on pastures or on a level, soil field. At that point it turned into an onlooker sport throughout the late spring months. Late evenings implied for baseball throughout the day, and individuals started paying cash to see games. It is as yet along these lines today. They were paying cash to see the best nearby players contend with the best players in different areas, districts or towns. From that point forward, since the turn of the 21st century, baseball has been a staple of American life, culture, and society. This might be the explanation baseball is called, on numerous occasions, â€Å"America’s Favorite Pastime.† Today, Major League Baseball has become the expert on proficient baseball in the United States †and has become a multi-million-dollar organization (if not a multi-billion-dollar one). Itsâ games and other retail things pull in a huge number of Americans consistently, and the expert association fan base reaches out to South America, Canada, Europa,â and Asia. Itsâ players †Major League Baseball players †make a great many dollars a year, through agreements with each group, which is basically a huge partnership, and through arrangements with sports gear organizations, backers, and other such things. That is a ton of cash for somebody to play a game that was played for the sake of entertainment by officers in the Civil War, a game played by kids on long summer days. Over the most recent a long time since the game was made, baseball †the real game itself †likely hasn’t changed excessively. It despite everything includes similar thoughts and requires a similar language, similar essentials of the game, itsâ basic standards and rules and measures and prerequisites. In any case, the game has undoubtedly changed. A significant issue in American expert baseball these past couple decades has been the utilization of execution improving medications, similar to steroids, among the game’s best and most acclaimed players. For somebody who grew up revering these players and needing to imitate them, it very well may be a genuine killjoy to think they are human and unsteady ones at that, too human to even consider being legends and to do courageous things. They are just individuals who could play a straightforward game to the point they could get paid to do it day in and day and for a considerable length of time at once. It has become a n industry and not only a game. That game has changed †and not really to improve things.

Polysemy

Polysemy originates from Neo-Latin polysemia, which originates from Greek polusemous [poly-(many) + sema (sign)] giving us an etymological term, â€Å"having numerous meanings† or various implications. A large portion of lex. things in English are polysemantic. Ex. : †family †She lost both of her folks. †parent †Envy is the parent all things considered. My family originates from Scotland. The feline family incorporates lions and tigers. ( ) A group of dialects, and so forth. There are monosemantic words: Ex. : a lorry, an amplifier Different implications of one and a similar word are intently interrelated.Polysemy is an aftereffect of: 1. Moves in application ( ? ) Ex. : adj. red: red ink (is extremely red), red hair, red deer, red cabbage, red Indian 2. Specialization: Ex. : accomplice Basic significance; a kind of connection between at least 2 individuals. †colleague †marriage accomplice †unruly accomplice 3. Allegorical augmentation (a pri ncipal highlight of any language) Ex. : leaf of a tree †leaf of a book, hands of an individual †hands of a clock Polysemy has been entangled by the inclination of words to get the implications from different lingos, dialects and slang. Ex. : executiveBrE †one who acts under the heading of someone †AmE †a supervisor now: AmE importance is all the more broadly utilized. New and old implications become interrelated, structure a chain of command. They have some normal semantic highlights, which safeguard the uprightness of the word. To start with, we have check/mass variations for things, which can serve a few capacities: (13) Animal/meat: a. The sheep is running in the field. b. John had sheep for breakfast. (14) Object/Stuff an article is made up: a. There is an apple on the table. b. There is apple in the plate of mixed greens. (15) Stuff/Kind: a. There was cheddar on the table. b. Three cheeses were served. 16) Stuff/Portions: a. The eatery served brew, thus b. we requested three brews. Plant/food rotation: (17) a. Mary watered the fig in the nursery. b. Mary ate the fig. We have shifts among compartments and contained: (18) a. Mary broke the jug. b. The infant completed the jug. Figure/Ground inversion: (19) a. The window is spoiling. b. Mary slithered through the window. Item/maker shift, e. g. paper, Honda: (20) a. The paper terminated its editorial manager. b. John spilled espresso on the paper. Procedure/result rotation: (21) a. The company’s merger with Honda will start the following fall. b.The merger will prompt the creation of more vehicles. Variations including area: (22) Building/establishment, e. g. college, bank (see over) (23) Place/individuals: a. John made a trip to New York. b. New York kicked the mayer out of office. (24) Capital/government, e. g. Washington denounced Havana not to do what's needed for the people in question. Having the option to recognize polysemy words and homonym words isn't simple. Word ref erences treat instances of numerous implications either as polysemy or as homonymy, however in reality it isn't in every case simple to choose which one we are managing, and word references now and again vary in their decisions. Are â€Å"table† (furniture) and â€Å"table† (game plan of information) two distinct words, or a similar word with two implications? Word references as a rule go for the last arrangement, on the grounds of a mutual historical underpinnings. Then again, â€Å"a pupil† (in school) and the â€Å"pupil† (of the eye) are typically recorded as various words; in spite of the fact that in certainty they have the equivalent verifiable root. What's more, balance this with the accompanying instances of significance variety, which show polysemy: (6) a. The bank raised its loan costs yesterday. b. The store is close to the recently built bank. c.The bank showed up first in Italy in the Renaissance. (7) a. John crept through the window. b. The window is shut. c. The window is made of security glass. (8) a. The ranch will bomb except if the dry spell closes soon. b. It is hard to cultivate this land. (9) a. The store is open. b. The hoodlum attempted to open the entryway. There are two significant contrasts: 1. To start with, it is promptly evident to speakers that the implications of a polysemous articulation are identified with one another. This is regularly not the situation for homophonous articulations, despite the fact that they might be truly related also (cf. ome of the models above). 2. Second, polysemy is normal. For instance, we locate the three implications outlined with bank in (6) (explicit establishment, constructing that houses the organization, and the kind of the foundation) with college also. Thus, we locate the three implications of window showed in (7) (way, opening, and solid article that can close an opening) with entryway. Polysemy is once in a while an issue for correspondence among individuals. We are so capable at utilizing relevant signs, that we select suitable faculties of words easily and uncounsiously. The sheer number of faculties recorded by certain sources as being accessible to us typically comes as an astonishment: out of around 60000 passages in webster’s seventh word reference 21488 or right around 40 % have at least two detects. Besides the most ordinarily utilized words will in general be polysemious. The action word run, for instance, has 29 faculties in webster's furter separated into about 125 subsenses. These orderly perspectives make polysemy a significant field of investigation of synchronic and generative semantics. Polysemy is a crucial idea inside controls, for example, media studies and etymology.

Water Balance Lab Report Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Water Balance - Lab Report Example The vegetation and close to costal geology of Berkeley is distinctive when contrasted with the uneven mainland Terre Haute which prior had an encouraging water stockpiling with a more drawn out period. Sticky and sight-seeing with high weight describe Berkeley, which has dry and hot seasons. The sign to this is through the precipitation levels, which are precipitations short of what one centimeter in the area during summer and up to 10 centimeters ascend in precipitation in a similar locale during winter. This basically implies there is an ascent in precipitation during winter and a fall during summer. This movements center to the prior referenced vegetation, which can just get by in each area in turn. When contrasted with a low-lying beach front stretch California, Indiana has high height levels meaning the climatic changes in the two districts vary. Precipitation come due to the damp breezes that blow from the seas due to vanishing that persistently occur in seas. At the point when dissipation happens in the seas, winds blowing gather the water in sticky structure along these lines realizing precipitation. The last explanation recommends that without twists there can be no precipitation clarifying why precipitation is less in dry zones yet high in soggy and frigid regions. There is a higher probability of Evapotranspiration occurring realized by high weight and temperatures. The two figures clarify that when there are high speeds of wind, precipitation goes high and the other way around. In this manner, during the months or November to walk when the breeze speeds are marginally higher than different months, the precipitation levels are high. It is during the long stretches of November to walk that high temperature levels power water to go to fume which climbs to the climate and falls as regular precipitation after buildup. Science clarifies that when water climbs as far as fume it

Definition and Discussion

Lexical meaning  refers to the  sense (or meaning) of a word  (or lexeme)  as it appears in a dictionary. Also known as semantic meaning, denotative meaning, and central meaning. Contrast with grammatical meaning  (or structural meaning). The branch of linguistics thats concerned with the study of lexical meaning is called lexical semantics. Examples and Observations There is no necessary congruity between the structural and lexical meanings of a word. We can observe a congruity of these meanings, for example, in the word cat, where both structural and lexical meaning refer to an object. But often the structural and lexical meanings of a word act in different or even diametrically opposite directions. For example, the structural meaning of protection refers to an object, while its lexical meaning refers to a process; and conversely, the structural meaning of (to) cage refers to a process, while its lexical meaning refers to an object. The tension between structural and lexical meanings I call the antinomy between grammar and the lexicon... The essential aspect of the interrelation between structural and lexical meanings is that lexical meanings constrain grammatical rules. Yet, in stating the laws of grammar we must abstract from the lexical constraints on the rules of grammar of individual languages. The laws of grammar cannot be stated in terms of the lexical constraints on the rules of grammar of individual languages. These requirements are captured in the following law: Law of Autonomy of Grammar From the Lexicon The meaning of the structure of a word or a sentence is independent of the meanings of the lexical signs that instantiate this structure. (Sebastian Shaumyan, Signs, Mind, and Reality. John Benjamins, 2006) The Sense Enumeration Model The most orthodox model of lexical meaning is the monomorphic, sense enumeration model, according to which all the different possible meanings of a single lexical item are listed in the lexicon as part of the lexical entry for the item. Each sense in the lexical entry for a word is fully specified. On such a view, most words are ambiguous. This account is the simplest conceptually, and it is the standard way dictionaries are put together. From the perspective of a typed theory, this view posits many types for each word, one for each sense. . . . While conceptually simple, this approach fails to explain how some senses are intuitively related to each other and some are not. . . . Words or, perhaps more accurately, word occurrences that have closely related senses are logically polysemous, while those that do not receive the label accidentally polysemous or simply homonymous. . . . Bank is a classic example of an accidentally polysemous word . . .. On the other hand, lunch, bill, and city are classified as logically polysemous. (Nicholas Asher,  Lexical Meaning in Context: A Web of Words. Cambridge University Press, 2011) The Encyclopedic View Some, though by no means all, semanticists have proposed that lexical meanings are encyclopedic in character (Haiman 1980; Langacker 1987).  The encyclopedic view of  lexical meaning is  that there is no sharp dividing line between that part of a words meaning which is strictly linguistic (the dictionary view of lexical meaning) and that part which is nonlinguistic knowledge about the concept. While this dividing line is difficult to maintain, it is clear that some semantic properties are more central to a words meaning than others, particularly those properties that apply to (almost) all and only the instances of the kind, which are intrinsic to the kind, and which are conventional knowledge of (almost) all of the speech community (Langacker 1987: 158-161). (William Croft, Lexical and Grammatical Meaning.  Morphologie / Morphology, ed. by  Geert Booij et al.  Ã‚  Walter de Gruyter,  2000) The Lighter Side of Lexical Meaning Special Agent Seeley Booth: Im glad that you apologized to the Canadian. Im proud of you, Bones. Dr. Temperance Bones Brennan: I didnt apologize. Special Agent Seeley Booth: I thought . . .. Dr. Temperance Bones Brennan: The word apology derives from the Ancient Greek apologia, which means a speech in defense. When I defended what I said to him, you told me that wasnt a real apology. Special Agent Seeley Booth: Why dont you think of a word that means you feel bad for making someone else feel bad? Dr. Temperance Bones Brennan: Contrite. Special Agent Seeley Booth: Ah! Dr. Temperance Bones Brennan: From the Latin contritus meaning crushed by a sense of sin. Special Agent Seeley Booth: There. Thats it. Contrite. Okay, Im happy that you contrited to the Canadian. William Shakespeares Presentation of the Two Pairs of Lovers in Much Ado About Nothing Much Ado About Nothing would have been pronounced Much Ado About Noting in Shakespeares time. Noting would infer seeing how things appear on the surface as opposed to how things really are. This provides an immediate clue as to how the play and the presentation of the story of the two pairs of lovers would be received by an audience of the time, living as they did in a patriarchal society which was based on social conventions and appearances. It can also be taken as an initial comment by Shakespeare about that society and its values and moral codes. Modern audiences, however,†¦show more content†¦She behaves in the manner society expects and does not question it at all. Claudio too is every bit the courtly hero of tradition and convention as demanded by the society of the time. He is a dashing young count returned from the wars in a blaze of glory. Claudio represents the romantic, with the flowery speech of a lover. He says of Hero; Can the world buy such a jewel? His love is based on an appreciation of her looks and status. In Elizabethan times women were wooed in the presence of and often on behalf of other parties as in the play. Thus the business of Don Pedro at the masked ball wooing Hero on behalf of Claudio, rather a strange concept to modern audiences, would be totally accepted as normal to a contemporary audience. Shakespeare introduces devices of masks and deception to underline the superficiality of a society where truths are hidden below appearances. Throughout the first acts of the play, Hero and Claudio behave and proceed with their courtship in a manner befitting the conventions of the time. Claudio wants to be sure that Hero would make a suitable bride before he pursues her. He asks Don Pedro: Hath Leonato any Son, my Lord? This would not be unreasonable at the time, as suitors were expected to find a partner who was ofShow MoreRelatedLove in Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare Essay2260 Words   |  10 PagesLove in Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare Shakespeare is well known for presenting the full repertoire of human emotions, and love is no exception. Confucianism And Raise The Red Essay Example For Students

Confucianism And Raise The Red Essay What has happened to Confucianism. For a long time, Confucian was accepted as the idea that a healthy society depended on a solid traditional family. Confucius himself, for example, called for people to put principle above selfish desires. People supported hierarchy. The rulers moral example would inspire the people to live good lives. But one begins to detect a new theme emerging in society especially amongst the Chinese reformers: the theme of individualism oppose to familialism. Today, would the Confucian family be more and more aware of abuse to women and children? The rituals and traditions can be seen as both positive and negative. The ways in which women suffered affirm that some rituals were abusive. There are multiple signs indeed that something has gone badly wrong with the Chinese family traditions that led to family instability. To begin with, one of the major problems that hindered the Chinese family is customs and rituals. On the other hand, some of these family traditions allowed the family to flourish as a group. In the movie Raise the Red Lantern, many types of customs and rituals were shown. For example, according to the masters tradition, lanterns are lit outside the house of which the master chooses to join for the night. Each night the wives wait to be honored with his presence, bowing in resignation when they arent chosen, often scheming to be noticed next time. The women soon begin to compete for the lanterns. They are jealous of one another and double cross one another. This brings out a darker side of the women capable of anything in order that their needs are met. This example shows a negative aspect. It is a humiliation of the neglected mistresses. The positive aspect may be the power of the wife who gets chosen. Her needs are being met and she gets to pick the meal for the night. There are documents that show actual life in the Confucian family in late traditional times in China before the advent of modern Western ways. In the last sixteen century by one of the elders of the Miu lineage made a set of practical instructions. These help people run their household. The main purpose of these rules is to protect individual family members and help united the family. One very important rule of the Confucian family is that under no circumstances should birthdays become pretext for heavy drinking (Document 2 p. 69). In Raise the Red Lantern, the fourth mistress, Songlian, decided to drink very heavily to celebrate her birthday. This action by her went against the Confucian rule of not drinking to celebrate ones birthday. There is one exception to the rule is the birthday of those who are beyond their sixty-first year, which should be celebrated by their sons and grandsons drinking to their health (Document 2 p. 69). Songlian drinking had a negative effect on herself and the third sister. While she was drinking heavily she mentions an affair between the third sister and the family doctor. If Songlian had not been drinking she would not have betrayed the third sister. I will agree that under in influence of alcohol, unintentionally, bad things will happen. Raise the Red Lantern shows how the wives were pampered. One way they were pampered they were given personal servants. One could look at this as a positive aspect. Rather than cook and clean themselves they had maids who did things for them. I noticed in the movie the maids were constantly wiping down the furniture. As written in the Family Instructions, the inner and outer room, halls, doorways, and furniture should be swept and dusted every morning at dawn (Doc. .u585fa4514149f3a862fd462713a79b3a , .u585fa4514149f3a862fd462713a79b3a .postImageUrl , .u585fa4514149f3a862fd462713a79b3a .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u585fa4514149f3a862fd462713a79b3a , .u585fa4514149f3a862fd462713a79b3a:hover , .u585fa4514149f3a862fd462713a79b3a:visited , .u585fa4514149f3a862fd462713a79b3a:active { border:0!important; } .u585fa4514149f3a862fd462713a79b3a .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u585fa4514149f3a862fd462713a79b3a { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u585fa4514149f3a862fd462713a79b3a:active , .u585fa4514149f3a862fd462713a79b3a:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u585fa4514149f3a862fd462713a79b3a .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u585fa4514149f3a862fd462713a79b3a .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u585fa4514149f3a862fd462713a79b3a .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u585fa4514149f3a862fd462713a79b3a .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u585fa4514149f3a862fd462713a79b3a:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u585fa4514149f3a862fd462713a79b3a .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u585fa4514149f3a862fd462713a79b3a .u585fa4514149f3a862fd462713a79b3a-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u585fa4514149f3a862fd462713a79b3a:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Federalism Essay 2 p. 71). Once again we see another family ritual being followed. The negative effect is they became too dependent on all the pampering they received. This special treatment was given to them so they would remain dependent women. If any Confucian rules were broken, strict punishment would be imposed. Document two mentions, family members who deliberately violate family regulations should be taken to the family temple, have their offenses reported to the ancestors, and be severely punished.(Doc. 2 p 71) In Raising the Red Lantern .

A sense of finality in the Requiem Essay Example

A sense of finality in the Requiem Essay Example A sense of finality in the Requiem Paper A sense of finality in the Requiem Paper The word Requiem, meaning a mass for the repose of the souls of the dead, has very formal and funereal connotations. This title immediately gives the passage a sombre atmosphere, and an air of finality as death is the end of Willys life and the play. Willys presence is still the predominating force behind the passage even though he is dead, echoing the title Requiem. The passage is a requiem in two different ways. Charley, Biff and Linda praise the physical and practical side of Willys character whereas Happy mourns his determination to fulfil his dream. The passage begins with a very emotionless and practical sentence by Charley, when he says Its getting dark, Linda. The darkness also gives the play a sense of finality, as the play is about to conclude night is about to fall. The black of the dark is symbolic of Willys tragedy. Happy appears to be angry with his father for having committed suicide, saying There was no necessity for it, the over complication of using the word necessity in this sentence shows Happys insecurity within himself that he has failed his father. Happy later goes on to say that even if Biff will not, he will continue to fight for his fathers dream. He says, Im gonna win it for him. Happys urge to fulfil his fathers dream is probably linked to his guilt of having let him down; Happys pledge gives the play a cyclical feeling rather than an air of finality. At the beginning of the Requiem Linda struggles to show emotion for her husbands death, although she would like to. Forgive me, dear. I cant cry, she says to Willys grave. It is as though she is still trapped in Willys dream and is looking for some kind of release. This is emphasised when she says I made the last payment on the house today. Today dear. The repetition of today stresses the irony in this sentence, and her longing for release. Shortly after this statement she finally begins to cry as A sob rises in her throat and she finally begins to cry as A sob rises in her throat and she immediately feels a sense of release, saying Were free. Miller makes it deliberately ambiguous about whether it is Linda who is free from Willy or whether the freedom actually refers to Willy and Linda being free from the payments on their house. This sense of release and the words were free repeated at the very end of the play are a final conclusion to the tragedy, and give the passage a sense of finality. Happy is excluded from the conclusion to emphasise the fact that he is adopting his fathers dream and continuing the tragic cycle. There is therefore no sense of finality for Happy and this is juxtaposed with the closure of Willy and Linda, emphasising the difference between their freedom and Happys confinement.

How Does Lord of the Flies reflect the Second World War essays

How Does Lord of the Flies reflect the Second World War essays William Golding wrote " Lord of the Flies " after the Second World War was over. Many of the things that Golding wrote about can be related to aspects of war. One of the major themes in the book is the power struggle between Jack and Ralph. In war this represents the two sides, the Allies and the Axis. Many objects that are found in the book can also be related to war. For example the conch represented law and order so that when it was broken, it was symbolic of law and order breaking down because the conch was so visual. This emphasised its broken state. One of the major points that Golding wrote about was the power struggle between the two main characters Jack and Ralph. Throughout the book they represented the breakdown of relations between England and Germany. When the boys crashed onto the island, Ralph was immediately voted as the leader because he was very handsome and, at first had somewhat of a rapport with the boys. This strongly represented England just before the Second World War had started. England was a very civilised country, with great industrial strength and a big empire with strong forces. She looked impressive compared to less modernised countries. Germany was still strong but they had a much smaller empire with much less power. The Germans were also still paying reparations for their actions in world war one and were coming out of a period of hyperinflation. Germany was envious of England and in "Lord of the Flies" the jealousy that Jack feels towards Ralph is enormous and represents the situation between Engla nd and Germany before World War two. Golding represents Hitler as Jack in the group of schoolboys. He conveys to the reader how cruel Jack is by showing us how a schoolboy can change into a murderer. A good example of this is in an early chapter we see that Jack is unable to kill the pig. When he finally does kill a pig, there is a significant change in Jack, which ultimately lead to the boys' downfall...

Managing Work Activities Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Managing Work Activities - Assignment Example It also discusses the importance of planning in business, relationship between departments, and the exchange of information in an engineering company. The paper distinguishes between the single use plan designed to be used only once for a specific purpose, and the standing plans which are made to be used repetitively. The engineering departments are linked to one another by the roles they act, which enable all to contribute to the success of the business. Necessary information also flows across different departments coordinating their functions. Keyword: Engineering, Production, Departments, Planning, Quality Control, Functions, Processes, Customers, Suppliers, Engineering Business 1. Identify at least five functions of an engineering business (which could be the engineering business you established in assignment 1). Classify those functions according to their purpose. Show the relationship between these business functions using the organisational structure of the engineering busines s The role an engineering business plays ensures that an optimal path is developed so that the user of the product or service produced, through the operations that have been used in the business, can obtain the maximum benefit at a minimal cost. The functions of the engineering business are hence not confined within the business or company operations in engineering the product but include the commercial roles that affect the engineering aspect functions. According to Tooley and Dingle (2010), design, research and development, product development, manufacturing, quality and planning are the engineering functions, while sales, commissioning, marketing, distribution, finance and purchasing are the commercial functions. The engineering functions direct the technical expertise, the tools and processes used and the way they should be implemented so that the right technical judgment is made. Some of the functions can be managed when grouped together, which saves resources, but all have a u nique feature whose general aim is the production. In any organisation, production needs inputs to come up with outputs; hence the engineering business has the management, suppliers, employees and customers. The business uses the purchasing function to access the suppliers for the required materials for production, from which the management takes the lead to ensure production uses a plan and schedule set. Research and development (R&D) and product development are ever consistent functions that ensure the business remains competitive and brings to the consumers what they need, by involving the expertise in the marketing fields, designs and productions so that the invention or the customer’s needs are met. The processes in building the product involve following the designs or the manufacturing framework. From this stage, control is very critical for the management to produce within the budget, which liaises with the finance department to finance the immediate activities or thos e that would work in parallel. This helps to avoid delays in production and ensure the finances are used efficiently. When the products are out, they are delivered to the consumers through the marketing strategies. The business uses most of the commercial functions at this point to finish the stock. Sales should find and maintain customers in the future market. The business gets to distribute their products to the wholesale shops, sometimes the

A Postmodern Cultural Perspective in Lolita and A Streetcar Named Desir

A Postmodern Cultural Perspective in Lolita and A Streetcar Named Desire Postmodernism has emerged as a reaction to modernism thoughts and "well-established modernist systems". (Wikipedia, 2005) Specific to Nabokov's Lolita and Williams' Streetcar Named Desire is the idea that both of the novels are written under the view of postmodernism as a cultural movement and that they are broadly defined as the condition of Western society especially after World War II (period in which the novel were written; 1947 for Streetcar and 1955 for Lolita). While modernists viewed people as autonomous (capable of independent rational thought), postmodernists see human identity and thinking as the product of culture. (Xenos Christian Fellowship, 2005). The postmodern main assumption here is that culture and society create individuals as well as all their thoughts and attitudes. Lolita and A Streetcar Named Desire both treat of Cultural Relativism, which is the view that each culture has it's own truths that are relevant to them, but not relevant to other cultures. (Wikipedia, 2005) Economic changes, immigration, capitalism expansion, development of mass and popular culture, which result of the post-war period will also play a great role in defining cultural perspectives in Nabokov and Williams' stories and characters but also in defining the American culture itself. The main characters serve as archetypes of different cultures and symbolizes the integration of Europe in the the Un... ...umbert's European ear also revises American idiom when he talk about his "west-door neighbor." (Lolita, p. 179) To conclude, both stories have a strong cultural orientation, which result from the post World War II environment, in which a crassly materialistic and insensitive industrial society followed. The postmodern assumption that human identity and thinking are the product of culture and that culture and society create individuals as well as all their thoughts and attitudes (Xenos Christian Fellowship, 2005), is clearly demonstrated by Lolita's consumerist ideals and Blanche's collapse in the new southern culture.

Craft-Oriented Objects Essay

We encounter many craft- oriented objects day to day. I do not think I really thought about how objects were made and their value in life until I received this assignment. As I was thinking about all of the things that are craft- oriented, I especially thought about things at work and my home. I actually work at a dress shop and I’ve thought about how those dresses were made. Every dress company has a location where they make their dresses, like China. Each dress is handmade and takes many hours and hard work to make. I believe this is an art of craft and has high value in a woman’s world. I also own many dresses of my own from going to prom and participating in various pageants. The next time I am wearing one of these delicate dresses I am going to take a minute to think about the hard work and long hours that it took to make my dress just for me. Another one of the many craft-oriented objects that I see and use every day is my home. My home is one of the most important places to me and it has several qualities that make it unique to me. It is amazing to think about all the hard work and the time that went in to building my house. Although my house has many craft-oriented objects in it, my house as a whole is a huge craft-oriented object in my everyday life.
